Overview of Canadian immigration family sponsorship

To support family reunification for Canadian citizens and permanent residents, the government introduced the Family Sponsorship Program. Through this program, citizens and permanent residents can sponsor their family members' to immigrate to Canada. The program aims to unite sponsors with their spouses, common-law partners, dependent children, parents and grandparents to live in Canada permanently.

What is Canadian Family Sponsorship?

The key features of the Canadian Family Sponsorship program include:

  • Eligibility: Sponsors must be at least 18 years old and show financial ability to support the sponsored family members.

  • Who Can Be Sponsored: Spouses, common-law partners, dependent children, parents, and grandparents are eligible.

  • Process: Submission of sponsorship applications for those who are eligible applicants, making sure all requirements is met.

What Are The Income Requirements To Sponsor?

If you are planning to sponsor a family member to immigrate to Canada, you need to meet certain income requirements. These are set on two main criteria which are:

  • Your household size

  • Low-Income Cut-Off (LICO) thresholds established by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).

What Are The Income Requirements To Sponsor?

When sponsoring a spousal and common-low partner, or a dependent child, you might not be asked for income proof. But if you are applying for a sponsorship program for these family members along with additional family members like your parents or grandparents, then income proof has to be submitted.

When applying for sponsorship of parents or grandparents, you need to show proof that you have sufficient income for the last three consecutive years that is enough to support them when they join your family. You can provide Notices of Assessment from the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) as proof. This is important because you need to provide for the people you are sponsoring and not burden the social assistance programs of the Canadian government.

What Is A Sponsorship Undertaking?

To sponsor a spousal and common-law partner or any other family sponsorship under Canada’s Family Sponsorship Program, you have to submit a sponsorship undertaking. A sponsorship undertaking is a binding commitment demonstrating your financial ability to support sponsored family members from their arrival in Canada. It is an agreement that makes sure the sponsored family members will not rely on Government programs like social assistance for their essential needs like food, shelter and healthcare.

The duration of the undertaking will depend on your relationship with the sponsored family member. It is:

  • 3 years for a spouse or common-law partner

  • 10 years for dependent children or until the child turns 25 whichever is first

  • 20 years for parents and grandparents

To qualify for the family sponsorship program in Canada, you have to sign this sponsorship undertaking. This makes sure that the sponsor is ready to take all financial liability of their sponsored relatives without Government subsidies. This undertaking aims to promote self-sufficiency among immigrants.
